Duchy of Cornwall announces new sustainable homes to tackle Scilly housing shortageDuchy of Cornwall announces new sustainable homes to tackle Scilly housing shortage
24th September 2025

The Duchy of Cornwall has announced plans to build ten sustainable houses which will bring much needed homes to the Isles of Scilly.

The development, located in Telegraph on St Mary’s, will include four one-bedroom properties, four two-bedroom properties, and two three-bedroom homes. These essential-need dwellings will be subject to a Section 106 agreement, making them available only to those who have lived on the Isles of Scilly for more than five years or who currently work on the islands.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the homes will feature high levels of insulation, positive ventilation throughout and rooftop solar panels. Each property will also have electric vehicle charging points with a dedicated parking space for the island car share scheme.

With planning permission secured and construction set to begin in October 2025, the Duchy has partnered with contractor S J Quick & Sons for the project. The homes are expected to be ready for residents in winter 2026.

This development represents the Duchy of Cornwall’s continued investment in the Isles of Scilly and is supported by the Duchy’s recent establishment of a team of skilled tradespeople responsible for the ongoing maintenance and improvement of its property portfolio on Scilly. The team includes a trades team supervisor and skilled carpenter, a plumber, a general builder, as well as a painter and decorator, and an electrician - both of whom are due to start in September 2025.
