Sustainable Operational Management

This new Key Area was added to the Duchy Stewardship Scheme in 2005. It addresses the Duchy’s office and staff working practices. The Duchy has adopted procedures outlined in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol of the World Resources Institute/World Business Council for Sustainable Development. The Duchy has set itself two objectives:

• To direct the operational management of the Duchy – its offices and staff working practices –
in a more sustainable and carbon-neutral manner.
• To develop internal and external environmental reporting in line with best practice

The carbon footprint of the Duchy is not large. The main contributors are business travel (240,000 miles per year) and employee commuting (xxx, xxx miles driven, x,xxx miles by train), and the non-electric fuel used in its offices and in-hand properties, the Duchy’s electricity supply having been 100% renewable for some years.

In the 2005/06 Duchy Parliamentary Accounts a formal accounting note will be included giving details of the Duchy’s carbon footprint and the measures being taken to reduce and offset the impact of its carbon emissions. A full financial provision will be made in the accounts, reducing the surplus distributable to HRH The Prince of Wales, so that the Duchy can invest in carbon offset programmes and will therefore be a net zero carbon emitter.
