Rural Regeneration

The Prince of Wales has long believed in supporting the recovery and redevelopment of our abandoned or neglected architectural heritage, both to save historic buildings and to promote regeneration for commercial and residential use.

Since the early 1980s the Duchy of Cornwall has recognised the values and benefits of converting redundant farm buildings to places of work and has, over the ensuing 25 years, established a portfolio of in excess of 100 such units of various types of space. Disused stables and farm buildings have now become quality office space for consultancies and financial managers as well as studios and workshops for traditional craftspeople and creative companies.

The size of the regeneration and restoration projects can vary from a vacant granary such as the Rickyard at Newton St Loe to the recently acquired Harewood Park, a 360 hectare estate which had stood empty or derelict for nearly 30 years. Other examples include some rural offices which will employ 17 people in Herefordshire, and some retirement cottages in a small village near Bath which have enabled retirees to stay in their village in more suitable accommodation.
