A nature-rich planA nature-rich plan
Our vision for nature is an estate where nature enriches people and people enrich nature.
We cannot ignore the fact that nature is in decline. According to the Natural History Museum's Biodiversity Intactness Index (2021), The UK is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. And since 1970, we have witnessed an average decline in wildlife populations globally of 73% (WWF State of Nature Report 2024).
Our nature‑rich plan marks a renewed commitment: to create an estate where biodiversity thrives, water and air are clean, soils are healthy, and people benefit from nature without depleting it. Guided by national policy and shaped through collaboration with government as part of Defra’s National Estate for Nature group, the Duchy is re‑committing to playing its part in restoring nature at scale and for the long term.
