Design and Development

The Duke of Cornwall’s desire to protect and sustain the natural environment is matched by his interest in the built environment and how it affects the quality of people’s lives. In looking to the future, The Duke believes that more should be done to create urban areas with a human scale that encourage a sense of community and pride of place.

To put his ideas and principles into effect, the Duke of Cornwall has created Poundbury, the urban extension of Dorchester in Dorset built on Duchy land, and established his charity The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment, the only institution in the UK which specialises in providing consultancy and education services for large-scale urban development or regeneration projects.

At Poundbury and Newquay one of the main ambitions is to create a sustainable community that is safer and healthier for its residents; where the pedestrian takes priority over the car; and where communities are mixed-use with workplaces integrated with housing, providing local jobs and community facilities.

In respecting the past, The Duke continues to support the recovery and redevelopment of abandoned or neglected architectural heritage. The Duchy has regenerated a number of derelict cottages and farm buildings for the local community which have been used to provide a variety of rented houses, cottages and rural workplaces.
