Around the Duchy
Isles of ScillyThe Isles of Scilly is an archipelago 28 miles from Cornwall, comprising over 200 islands and rocks. There are five inhabited islands; St Mary’s, Tresco, St Martin’s, St Agnes and Bryher. The Isles of Scilly have been part of the Duchy of Cornwall since its foundation in the 14th Century. The Duchy owns the freehold of most of the land and nearly a third of the residential buildings on the Islands. The islands are characterised by some of the finest beaches in Britain, exposed granite headlands, white sandy coves, important moorland sites and small, box-like fields sheltering the yellow narcissi flowers, an historic industry on Scilly. Tourism is the most important industry on Scilly, accounting for more than 85 per cent of the Island's economy and employing more than 70 per cent of its population. 100 Isles for 1 daffodilThe Isles of Scilly were designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1975 with a remit to protect and enhance their natural beauty. The AONB unit also works closely with the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust. The Trust’s role on the Islands is to manage all the untenanted land, uninhabited islands and rocks leased to it by the Duchy of Cornwall. It has three primary remits involving the conservation of marine wildlife and their habitats, the landscape, and the archaeological/historical remains. The Trust pays a rent to the Duchy of one daffodil per year! TourismTourism is the lifeblood of the Island’s economy and provides employment for more than two thirds of the people living in Scilly. Rural HousingLike many rural areas in popular tourist destinations, the provision of affordable housing is one of Scilly’s main challenges. To help address this problem, the Duchy is working with a Housing Association to provide 18 new affordable homes on St Mary’s and the off-islands. The Duchy of Cornwall is one of the key partners within The Prince of Wales’s Affordable Rural Housing Initiative and provides affordable units in a number of its developments. The Duchy also currently allocates 20 of its houses on the Isles of Scilly for key workers. Marketing and Flower FarmingThe Duchy is working on a number of initiatives to help regenerate island farm incomes. The Duchy supports the production and marketing of locally grown scented narcissi and is a member of Trenoweth Horticultural Centre on St. Mary’s. The centre’s main objectives are to carry out research and development to improve existing varieties of flower as well as to seek viable and sustainable alternatives in an ever demanding market. FishingA small fishing fleet operates out of the Scillies. The Duchy and the Fishermen with the help of European funding were able to refurbish a redundant building, install an ice making plant and provide quayside safety ladders for the crews. This small collaborative project has helped to secure the future of the fishing from the islands.Site designed and hosted by || Jump Media
